In Sulawesi, the best spot for snorkelling and diving is Bunaken Island. Bunaken Marine National Park is composed of 5 islands: Manado Tua, Siladen, Mantehage, Nain, Bunaken. The latter is well-known for its great snorkelling spots. It is the easiest island to access but also the most touristic of the small archipelago. Snorkelling or diving in Bunaken archipelago you can observe barrier reef, colourful corals, sharks, turtles and many fish.
Botubarani beach, in Gorontalo, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sulawesi and a well-known diving spot. There, if you’re lucky, you might experience a swim with whale sharks. A few years ago a pod settled off Botubarani beach, attracted by the shrimps rejected by a nearby factory.
Located in the Gulf of Tomini, Togian archipelago is composed of 56 islands, there are the most stunning beaches in Sulawesi. Isolated, wild and on a remote location, it isn’t easy to access Togian islands’ beaches but once there you will enjoy gorgeous landscapes all by yourself. White sand, turquoise water, coconut trees, small bungalows by the ocean… Togian islands’ beaches are paradise on Earth.
South of Sulawesi, explore Bira coastline. Only a few hours drive away from Makassar, Bira is an easy choice for your beach stay in Sulawesi. Once at Bira, enjoy white sand beaches or go snorkelling and diving and observe Sulawesi’s marine life. Bira beach is a peaceful spot for a seaside getaway. Nearby Bira village, a little detour via Apparalang and Bara beaches, might be worth it.
South of Sulawesi, is a hidden gem: Selayar archipelago. Very little people know about this little paradise on Earth. Take a stroll along the deserted beaches, stare at the pristine water, take some time for yourself or to meet the locals. There is no better place than Selayar Island to enjoy a beach stay in Sulawesi.
